Poker Hands Need help determining a winning hand? Want to know the difference between a straight and royal flush? Check out Texas Hold 'em Hand Rankings here Check out Texas Hold 'em Hand Rankings here
Patience is a Virtue Sometimes in a poker tournament you just hit that run of cards that can only be classified as a dead run. How many times do you want to get dealt 8,3 off suit? During these times it is important to remember to maintain focus and your patience as playing raggy hands just because you're bored will only get you into more trouble than it's worth.
Always be positive! When you play poker, you shouldn't do it to escape from a bad day. You start out on tilt - playing emotionally, not rationally - & you won't play your best. Likewise, if during a poker game, you lose a big hand or get sucked out on, stand up & take a break until you feel calm later on. Players will sense your mood & take advantage.
Keeping Honest? A lot of players look at a players final bet, look at the hand, say "I know you've got me, but I'm keeping you honest," as they final call. It may be worth it to see if a player really has the hand & you're gaining info that will help you, but if you feel he what he's representing & you're beat, why give him more of your chips?
Pot committed? A mistake is to think "Well, I've already put that much in, I have to stay in." You can't win a pot by throwing money at it. It may be that pot odds warrant a call, but if you're sure you're beaten, & your hand can't improve, fold. The money you've already put in the pot is gone, & you can't get it back just by playing to the end.
Bluffing! A lot of beginner's know bluffing is a part of poker, but not how to. There's is NO rule that one must bluff or at all, but players may not feel like they've won unless they've tried a bluff. Bluffs only work in sometimes & against some people, & if you know a player always calls to the showdown, it is literally impossible to bluff. It's better never to bluff than to bluff "just to bluff."
Folding isn't a weak play! Probably the number one mistake beginning poker players make is that they play far too many hands. When you're just starting out playing poker, you want to play poker, and that means staying in hands that aren't very good just to be part of the action. But playing more doesn't mean winning more, it usually means losing more. If you find you're staying in half or more the hands you're dealt, you need to upgrade your starting hand requirements.

Starting Selection! Hand selection is key for beginning players; here are the top 10 starting hands and as a beginner you should be looking to only play these hands: AA, KK, QQ, AK, JJ, AQ, KQ, AJ, KJ and AT. Sometimes in early position you may even want to avoid playing KQ, AJ, KJ and AT as you will often find your self outkicked if you hit a pair.
Position, Position, Position! Hold'em is a game of information; The player with the most information on opponents generally wins the most! So position is an important factor to consider, the later your position to act is the more information you will have about the table. The dealer button is the most premium position as the majority of players have to act before you preflop and all have to act before you post flop. Therefore you can make the most correct decision simply by seeing what everyone else at the table is going to do before you.
